If you ever wondered where your social insurance and pension contributions go you should learn about ZUS (The Polish Social Insurance Institution). ZUS is managed and supervised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and is one of the biggest and probably the most powerful institutions in Poland. One of the main tasks of ZUS is to establish the entitlement and pay social insurance and other benefits to the eligible citizens. To do so ZUS has to keep accounts of contributions and conduct all the calculations related to the accounts.

As in every country, some people blame the Insurance Institution for its inefficiency and a great amount of bureaucracy, however, the system has been changed in 1999 and none of the proposed changes since then has been introduced.

The main areas of expertise

The main tasks of ZUS:
– establishing the entitlement to social insurance benefits
– paying-out of social insurance benefits
– assessment and collection of social insurance and health insurance contributions and contributions to the Labour Fund and the Fund of Guaranteed Employee Benefits
– maintaining individual accounts of the insured and accounts of contribution payers

ZUS is very well organised and has many organisational units such as branches, inspectorates and field offices. You can find the full list of them on this website.

If you want to become an expert on all ZUS-related topics here is an excellent brochure in English ‘Social Security in Poland’ prepared by ZUS .
